Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatments: 3 Steps In Eating Your Way Back To Recovery

Firstly, frequent meals with smaller portion of foods are advisable in place of regular three meals of the usual normal food amount. This is to avoid eating too full or complete giving the stomach the fullness as well as not going into hunger. Both extreme will agitate the stomach to react negatively in increasing gastrointestinal activities thus propelling more gastric acidity level. Over or under eating irritates the gastrointestinal tracts activity, increases gastric acidity and adding to the gases produced within the gastrointestinal areas. This results in bloating and abdominal pain. Each patient should therefore consume the right amount of food based on individual's condition. In addition to the three meals a day, there should be further addition of 2 to 3 meals of less sugary pastry or pure bread as snack. In particular, it is good to eat pure baked bread, as this contains less moisture while the starch content can be easily digested.

One should also develop the habit of chewing food in the mouth. Most people would just swallow their food after a few bites. Now, it is good to train the mouth to chew more often and giving each mouthful of food around 50 bites. Many people have the habit of giving their food a few bites thereafter swallowing it straight away into the stomach. This in fact is giving the stomach more work to do in digesting the “half eaten” food. By chewing more and thereby grinding the food into smaller and more digestible size, it relieves the gastric of more work to digest them. Once the gastric is relieved of more work to do in digesting the food, it gets less acidity thus reducing the gastric irritation.

Secondly, eat simple. Choose the type of food that is easy to digest, sufficient in daily calories protein, and vitamins requirement. Food such as rice, spaghetti, milk, soft rice, soy milk, leaves and so on. Symptoms can be minimized in patients who choose over normal meal. It is still advisable to avoid eating fried, oily and crude fiber types of food at all cost. At the same time care should be taken to avoid eating raw and cold foods. On the other hand, it is also advisable not to consume food while it is still hot, this is especially so when drinking soups.

Thirdly, avoid any food that triggers IBS syndrome. Food that is too sweet, pepper, raw onions, raw garlic, fruit juice, coffee, wine and tea can be avoided if necessary. If one is addicted to caffeinated drinks, just cut the portion intake to a quarter amounts. In addition, patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome should stop smoking as the nicotine in tobacco can change the pH level in the body, disrupting the normal pyloric activity, induce or aggravate IBS condition.
