IBS Treatments

How is IBS treated?

Well, probably you have been told that there isn't any cure to IBS. It is correct to say there isn't any specific drug to address the IBS problems completely. The approach to deal with IBS revolves around the following 5 key areas, namely “REDEEM”;

Not anybody's cup of tea? Look again.

Relaxation
- we need to relax and take a step back each time we move on. Learn to destress oneself after a hard day's work. A major factor contributing to IBS originates from "within the mind"; the brain-gut theory. This may not be necessary the cause but the "REDEEM" approach would need to train the mind as well. Therefore, this ranks first in our approach to handle IBS syndrome before we proceed even to the other "redeemers". Listening to music after a hard day's work, taking a stroll after lunch or dinner or take the dog for a walk is helpful. To tame one's mood and thoughts are equally helpful. Make peace with oneself. One should learn to manage this stress in a minimal and manageable level. Stress management is a field of study in itself. Others could relax through meditation, yoga or practicing the Chinese Qigong could help in relieving the IBS symptoms.

Exercise
- in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercise is important. It is also a way to manage stress. Stress disturbs the biological processes which affect one’s digestion system. It builds up one's physical and psychological state of mind. And with dealing with IBS syndrome this is greatly encouraged. Sweating out is a way of detoxification.

Dietary Control
- to avoid irritating the gastrointestinal system. Choose a low fat, less oil, spicy and non-fried food. Some may recommend a high fiber based diet especially for patients with constipation. Alcohol, milk, caffeinated and cold drinks should be avoided.

Eating habits
- to help relief pressure building in the digestive system. Try to “process” the food in the mouth instead of directly passing the “processing” burden to the digestive system. This requires a change in the eating habit, for one to chew more, eat slowly and give the food good proper bites, avoid swallowing the foods by eating too fast.

Exercise 2
- yes, more exercise! Most working young adults are mainly focused on their career. Most under this group of patients are striking out for a career at the initial stage, work pressure are tremendously high. While taking on more pressure and stresses most of them didn't strike a balance in their lifestyle. Therefore, exercise is given double shot which is greatly emphasized under the "REDEEM" approach in dealing with and overcoming IBS syndrome.

Medicines/ Drugs
- this is the last resort. In order to relieve pains and discomfort should the symptoms are causing disruption to daily activities in a great way. It makes no sense to suffer in pain. However, any medication should be for short term purposes. In any doubtful situation, consult the doctor.

The above “REDEEM” approach undertakes a holistic way in dealing with IBS symptoms. By adopting “REDEEM”, one should be able to redeem back a healthy body and normal lifestyle!
